For the First Time in History, Global Grain Supply to Exceed 3 billion Tonnes

For the first time in history, global grain supply is at its all-time high of 2.412 billion tonnes in the marketing year of 2025-26. Followed by this, the total grain supply is projected to reach a record of 3 billion tonnes, according to the International Grains Council’s (IGC) most recent Grain Market Report. As per the monthly report released on Sept. 18, upgraded output for all grains except for rye (राई). The International Grains Council (IGC) projected an 87-million-tonne increase (4%) in total grains (wheat and coarse grains) year on year, and an 8-million-tonne increase from the previous month.

As per the records by the International Grains Council (IGC), “Despite unusually small carry-in stocks, the record crop will lift total supply above 3 billion tonnes for the first time ever,” the IGC reported. While the Wheat output is pegged at 819 million tonnes in 2025-26, a 2.5% increase year on year, corn production is also forecasted to reach at 1.297 billion tonnes, up 5% from 2024-25, the IGC said.

Trade of total grains is seen reaching 438 million tonnes, up 15 million tonnes from the previous year. If achieved, it would be the second highest on record, the IGC said. World soybean production is also poised to remain steady in 2025-26 at 429 million tonnes, as in case the soybean production falls anywhere, gains in South America will compensate for it.

Total use or consumption is seen advancing by 3% year on year as feed, food and industrial segments boosts processing to a peak reported the International Grains Council (IGC). The IGC forecasts global rice production at a record 544 million tonnes “with the population trend expected to boost uptake to a new peak.
