Farmers Block Highway in MP as Anger Erupts Over Agriculture Urea (Fertilizer) Shortage

The agriculture urea (fertilizer) shortage in Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh, shows no signs of abating. At the time when farmers need fertilizers the most, they are facing the shortage leaving them tensed and worried. The persistent shortage of agriculture urea finally erupted in intensified anger. Farmers protested and blocked the Kuwari River bridge around 6 a.m. over the unavailability of DAP fertilizer. A similar incident happened approx. a week ago at Khammam district of Telangana where  Fertilizer was subsequently distributed, but it proved to be a mere drop in the ocean.

Persistent Agriculture Urea Shortage Led to a Protest by Farmers

Farmers in the Vijaypur region were upset with the shortage of DAP fertilizer, which were distributed to them via a token system; however, despite standing in long queues for three consecutive days farmers could hardly receive urea. This is not the first time, farmers are protesting for agriculture urea. In the Badayun district of Uttar Pradesh also farmers are troubled by the shortage of urea and often have to face overrating at private shops. During the protest in Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh, farmers blocked the Kwari River bridge, bringing traffic to a complete standstill for nearly three hours.

Women and Children Also Participated in the Protest

Supporting the protest the families of farmers were also available at the site, including women and children. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the main road connecting Vijaypur to Gwalior, Morena, and Sheopur. Angry over the unavailability of fertilizer, the farmers sat on the bridge, shouting slogans, and protesting. The blockage, no doubt caused significant inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists. Upon receiving the information of the massive traffic jam administrative staffs rushed to the scene. Later the farmers were assured by the officials regarding the availability of agriculture urea. Upon receiving assurance from the administrative staff farmers ended up their protest.
