Farmers Urge Maize Control Order like sugar sector To Force Ethanol Producers to pay MSP

On Sunday, November 16, Farmer leader Rampal Jat urged that the government should introduce a maize control order like sugar sector to force ethanol producers to purchase the maize from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). He claimed that the ethanol price should be ₹ 54 per litre, whereas the government has fixed the purchase price at ₹71.86 per litre based on MSP.

What’s apart from introducing the maize control order?

Apart introducing maize control order, Speaking to the Media in New Delhi, he stated that when the government, after coming to power in 2014, announced to increase the ethanol blending with petrol, not only this, but it was also said that it would enrich the farmers by changing them into energy providers, while consumers would be able to buy petrol at ₹55 per litre. Furthermore, he alleged biasedness in the government policy while treating the maize farmers and the converting industries, and stated that when the government is purchasing the produce through the oil marketing companies at a guaranteed price. There is a need to determine the raw material price, too.

The average maize price was:

Jat said that ₹ 1,121/quintal was the average maize price in Nasrullaganj mandi of Madhya Pradesh, the second largest maize producing state, and in Nahargarh market in Rajasthan, accounting for 6 per cent of country’s total production, it was ₹ 1,510 per quintal.  The area under maize was 91.9 lakh hectares and production was 241.7 lakh tonnes in 2014-15. Now, it is increased to 120.17 lakh hectares and 422.81 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, he outlined and credited the government for its announcement on ethanol.
