India-US Agri Trade at All Time High Despite US Tariff Threats

Trade in farm Produce Sees Surge Despite Ongoing India-US Trade Deal

Even though the agriculture sector is a big hurdle in the India-US Trade deal, along with the purchase of Russian oil, an interesting fact has come into notice. Trade in agriculture produce between India and the United States is booming and is poised to touch new heights this year. As per the records, during January-June 2025, India’s imports of agricultural products from the US were at $1,693.2 million, which is a whopping 49.1% more than the $1,135.8 million for the same six months of the last calendar year. Not only the imports, India’s agricultural exports to the US too, were up by 24.1%, from $2,798.9 million in January-June 2024 to $3,472.7 million in January-June 2025.

India-US Trade Deal to Remain Unaffected by Tariff

Though Donald Trump has doubled the tariff on imported goods from India to 50%, the impact remains to be seen, but however as far as the trends suggest the two-way farm trade will surpass the previous highs. Also, if the growth rate remains similar as of now, India’s agricultural exports to the US could top $7.7 billion, and that of the US to India could be over $3.5 billion in 2025.

The United states mainly exports three nuts to India – mainly almonds and pistachios – both valued at $1.1 billion-plus in 2024, and registering further 42.8% annual growth during the first six months of this year. Further the US also exports ethanol, soyabean oil and cotton.

India’s Agricultural Exports to US are More Diversified

India’s agricultural exports to the US are somewhat more diversified, that includes seafood (primarily frozen shrimp), and other items include spices, essential oils to basmati rice, processed fruits & vegetables and baked foods with annual shipment value exceeding $200 million each.

The news of agriculture trade booming can be taken as some consolation especially at a time where India-US trade deal is at a standstill.
