Cotton Production Likely To Be Better This Year Despite A Reduction In The Cultivated Land And Heavy Rainfall

Cotton Production in India during 2025-26 is likely to be higher than last year despite a reduction in the cultivated land in the key producing states such as Maharashtra and Gujarat, and the heavy rainfall of august month badly affecting the cotton crops
This year, the hopes for higher yields have been increased due to the timely showers of rain and lower cases of pest attacks. This simply indicates towards the expansion of the overall size of cotton crops. Notably, Farmers have shifted to alternative crops of maize, groundnut and pulses as they have decreased the cotton area this year. The overall acreage is down by 2.53 per cent at 109.64 lakh hectares (lh) during the 2025 kharif season compared with 112.48 lh a year ago.

Cotton Production in Key Producing States

Cotton cultivation was recorded in 20.82 lh in major cotton-producing states such as Gujarat. This shows a decline of 12 per cent compared with 23.66 lh a year. Similarly, cotton production in Maharashtra, the area, declined to 38.44 lh (40.81 lh last year). Moreover, the area under cotton cultivation escalated in the Southern States, such as in Telangana, it increased to 18.51 lh (18.11 lh) and in Karnataka, where it increased to 8.08 lh (7.79 lh). However, in Andhra Pradesh, the area fell slightly to 3.77 lh (4.13 lh).
