Cambodia explores boosting farm exports to India, tapping opportunities in the world’s largest consumer market

Cambodia, one of the famous countries popular for its farm produce and farm exports especially rice and other notable products like cashew nuts, pepper, mangoes, and maize is seeking opportunities to export more farm products to India. Cambodian spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), said that India represents a promising market, particularly for Cambodian cashew nuts. Further, he also said that Cambodia is exploring the possibility of exporting cashew nuts, milled rice, and several spices, including turmeric powder, to the Indian market. In this context, a report released by the Cambodia Rice Federation states that Cambodia earned $1462 million from the export of paddy and milled rice in the first eight months of this year. However, this report of Cambodia exploring opportunities to boost farm exports including cashew nuts comes at a time when Tamil Nadu Government has already constituted a cashew board, which will work for the welfare of cashew growers and boost production and exports of the nut.

Cambodia Eyes Farm Exports to World’s Largest Consumer Market

Cambodia a major producer of cashew is capable of producing up to one million tonnes of cashew nuts annually. However, despite India’s vast market of 1.4 billion people, farm exports between the two countries so far, remains limited. From January to August 2025, bilateral trade reached only $248 million, an increase of 2.67 percent compared to the same period last year.

Of this total, Cambodia exported goods worth over $90 million to India, a decrease of 23.35 per cent, while imports from India amounted to $158 million, up 27.25 per cent. However, as per the latest reports Cambodia has recorded earnings of $1.462 million from paddy and milled rice exports in the first eight months of this year. The report said Cambodia exported a total of 472,803 tons of milled rice to 66 countries during this period, up 14.7 percent from 412,023 tons in the same period last year.
