Basmati rice is once again in news! This time it’s not the taste nor its aroma that is making the headlines, rather it is the export price which is at its 17-year low. Basmati rice is facing challenges in terms of exports this year. Despite a sharp drop in export price and the absence of a minimum export price, Basmati rice exporters have maintained their significant earnings this marketing year.
The export prices of Basmati rice fell by about 20 percent in this season, which started from October 2024. While the price was $ 1,226 per tonne last year, this time it started at $ 977 per tonne. Even after this, the prices fell continuously and by May 2025, the prices reached $ 831 per tonne, which is much lower than $ 1,080 a year ago.
The demand of Indian Basmati rice is constantly increasing at the global level due to its taste and nutritional values. About 6 million tonnes of Basmati rice has been exported by India to different countries of the world in 2024-25.
