Bangladesh government is set to procure parboiled rice and lentils as part of its attempt to ensure food security and market stabilisation measures. The rice tender news surfaced after the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase approved separate proposals for procuring some 50,000 metric tons of non-Basmati parboiled rice and 10,000 metric tons of lentil. The food grains will be procured under international open tender method at a cost of Tk214.90 crore.
What is Parboiled Rice?
Notably, parboiled rice is rice that has undergone a special pre-milling process of soaking, steaming, and drying while still in its husk, which locks in nutrients (like B vitamins, iron, fiber) and changes its texture, making it firmer, less sticky, and more resistant to breaking during milling and cooking.
