Assam-Israel Partnership: CM Biswas inaugurated the Centre of Excellence for Vegetables under the Indo-Israel Agricultural Project

Recently, an activity was conducted promoting the Assam-Israel Partnership, as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswas Sarma, on Monday, November 25, inaugurated the Centre of Excellence for Vegetables under the Indo-Israel Agricultural project at Khetri. It intends to modernise the state’s agriculture sector.
CM Sarma focused on Assam-Israel Partnership under Indo-Israel Agricultural Project
While addressing the gathering at the event, CM Sarma said that the centre presents strong India-Israel cooperation, combining Israel’s advanced agricultural technologies with Assam’s fertile land and committed farming community. Not only this, he also noted that project involved significant challenges, requiring resources, coordination and a long-term vision.
The government of India approved around Rs.5.84 crore for the project during 2020-21 with the Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project contributing an additional Rs 60 Lakh for land development and allied works. The facility is built using Israeli technology with central support, equipped with state-of-the-art irrigation systems and innovative crop management solutions.
Further, stressing the significance of the Agricultural project, to boost the horticulture production and promote modern farming practices, the centre will carry out training programmes for agricultural scientists and farmers. Moreover, CM Sarma appealed to the state’s youth to attend these capacity-building initiatives.
As per officials, the Centre has produced more than 7 lakh seedlings such as Papaya, tomato, marigold, colored capsicum, lettuce and broccoli, given free to farmers in the nine districts. Automated irrigation and fertigation systems are significant features enabling remote control of water and nutrient supply through mobile devices or computers. Nearly 600 farmers have been trained so far, with expected benefits for the agriculturally progressive Dimoria-Sonapur region.
Lastly, Sarma extended thanks to the Ambassador of Israel to India, Reuven Azar and Israeli experts for the support in building the project, spanning 21.78 acres. The centre includes a 1,200 sq m fan-pad greenhouse with soil-less cultivation, climate and humidity control, capable of producing 4.5 lakh high-value vegetable seedlings per production cycle.
