Dhoni Ram Chetia, a young Assam farmer, hails from Tekeri Gaon’s Pangeri area in Tinsukia district in Guwahati, and has shifted himself to a path of peace and progress via agriculture. His life has now focused on organic farming. He also encourages youth to explore the avenues for growing their own vegetables, fruits and grains. Notably, the district was once troubled by insurgency and social unrest.
Assam farmer’s struggle behind following the path of peace and agriculture
No doubt that Assam Farmer Chetia is being recognised as a progressive farmer; however, he resonates about the financial hardships that his family battled during childhood. Surprisingly, several educated youth in the area moved ahead to extremist groups seeking recognition or income, leading to conflict with the law enforcement agencies, but Chetia never looked at these groups. He spoke about the tragic moments of this life, like how he lost his father at the age of six and bore the responsibilities at a tender and young age that seemed to be extremely difficult. He mentioned: “My family members spent more time working in the fields than at home, and I neither had the time nor the inclination to follow a path of violence. At some age, earning a living was extremely challenging, but fortunately, due to kind neighbours who gave me payapas to sell, enabling me to earn from the sale”.
From practical experience in agriculture to Future Farmer
Financial restrictions halted this Assam Farmer from completing his degree, but his practical experience in agriculture sets his a future as a farmer. While denouncing the options like Job hunting as several other youths who turned disheartened eventually, he defended the awareness of the chances given by agriculture that are present in Assam. He stated: “Anyone can learn, share and attain something valuable in organic farming using social media” .
