Zimbabwe Targets Rice Self-Sufficiency Within Five Years

The Zimbabwe government has set a target to achieve rice self-sufficiency through production within the next five years, encouraged by a comprehensive strategy that includes a robust seed supply plan, farmer support packages and strong international partnerships. The programme’s theme is a seed multiplication initiative which is aimed at producing adequate seed to support the cultivation of about 50,000 hectares of rice. It marks a significant shift towards reducing imports and strengthening national food security. According to one of the professors, the thrust of the programme is to ensure that Zimbabwe can meet its domestic rice requirements within the set timeframe, with particular emphasis on addressing seed availability, which has been identified as a major constraint. The strategy is clear, which is to produce all the rice that they need in the country. Not only this, the international co-operation is playing a crucial role in accelerating the programme, with Japan emerging as a key partner providing both rice genetics and technical expertise.
Wholesale Rice Prices Jump 7% as West Asia Ceasefire Triggers Export Surge

According to the latest updates, rice prices in India surged to 7% at the wholesale level in the past two years, after the US-Iran ceasefire triggered various orders for exports to the Middle East and the US. The rebound follows an up to 6% fall in prices after the Iran war caused disruptions in maritime traffic. Dev Garg, Vice President, IREF, said that the impact will be felt at the retail level within the next fortnight. The conflict has led to severe trade disruptions, with 400,000 tonnes of Basmati consignments stranded at ports or in transit, disrupting export cycles. Additionally, Payment disruptions are also significant. However, the news of the ceasefire has created a positive sentiment in the rice trade, with exporters getting ready to ship both basmati and non-basmati rice to the West Asian nations.
Nabuna Farmers Harvest 1.4 Tonnes of Rice in Community Effort

Farmers in Nabuna, Fiji, have completed a community-led rice harvest in Nabuna, Fiji, yielding approximately 1.4 tonnes of rice, marking a notable achievement for local agriculture and rural cooperation. The efforts reflect growing momentum in community-based farming initiatives aimed at strengthening domestic food production and reducing dependence on imported staples. The harvest demonstrates how small-scale farming, when organised collectively, can contribute meaningfully to food security at the village level. Local farmers worked together throughout the cultivation cycle, from land preparation and planting to irrigation management and harvesting, showing strong coordination and shared responsibility. Officials and stakeholders view such initiatives as significant steps toward enhancing rural livelihoods, improving nutrition security, and building resilience against food supply disruptions. Whereas the output remains modest in scale, the initiative serves as a foundation for expanding rice cultivation and strengthening long-term agricultural self-reliance in the region.
