Why Tamil Nadu CM Urges Centre to Retain 35 kg Rice Quota for AAY Beneficiaries?

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has urged the PM Narendra Modi to retain the existing monthly allocation of 35 kg of rice for all Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration card holders. In a letter to the Prime Minister, he expressed concern that the proposed amendment to the National Food Security Act could decrease foodgrain entitlements for nearly 58.5 lakh beneficiaries in the state.

Moreover, the Chief Minister said the existing allocation is significant for economically vulnerable families that depend on the Public Distribution System (PDS) for their daily food requirements. He also warned that any reduction in rice entitlement could adversely affect low-income households which could increase the risk of food insecurity, hunger, and malnutrition.

He appealed to the Centre to reconsider the proposed changes and continue the current allocation, focusing that food security remains a key welfare priority for millions of disadvantaged families in the state.
