In Punjab, renowned for its quality food, cases of milk adulteration and dairy products have reached alarming levels. The latest report from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) reveals that 47% of milk, cheese, and dairy products tested in the past three years have failed the test. According to the report, a total of 1,915 samples were collected over the past three years, of which 902 were found to be adulterated. In 2024–25 alone, 255 out of 531 samples failed the standards.

Cheese - the most adulterated one in all dairy products

Cheese is the most adulterated, with chemicals and starch being used extensively. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) teams report that cheese samples are the most adulterated. Starch, sucrose, and other chemicals were found in many products, a clear violation of food safety standards. The report also indicates that the supply of imported substandard cheese and dairy products to Punjab is steadily increasing.

Situation is dire in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh

The situation is dire in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as well, with hundreds of samples failing. In Haryana, 529 out of 1,451 samples taken over three years were found unsafe. The situation is even more serious in Uttar Pradesh, where 8,299 out of 12,945 samples failed. Interestingly, the Health Department's Food Safety Team seized 1,378 kg of fake cheese from Rajpura in April, while a large consignment of 1,640 kg was seized in July, which was being shipped to Jalandhar. The Food Safety on Wheels van is regularly testing milk, cheese, water, and other food items.
