Kerala farmers have received a substantial boost with revised schemes worth Rs 30 crore from Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on World Coconut Day. The Agriculture Minister virtually inaugurated the program that includes major financial support enhancements. These enhancements deal with rising cultivation costs, fertiliser prices, and climate-related challenges which are being faced by coconut growers. Additionally, these initiatives aim to rejuvenate Kerala’s coconut sector through value addition and export opportunities.
World Coconut Day celebrations today
Kerala, the land known for its coconuts, is at the heart of India’s World Coconut Day celebrations taking place today. The celebrations are observed on the foundation day of the International Coconut Community (ICC). The theme of this year is Uncovering Coconuts’ Power, Inspiring Global Action. The Program will witness the distribution of Export Excellence Awards, the release of new publications by the Coconut Development Board (CDB), and a technical session on processing, value addition, and exports. The spotlight of the celebrations is the announcement of revised farmer welfare schemes worth more than Rs 30 crore in Kerala.
Benefits to Coconut Sector Workers
Furthermore, Coconut sector workers will now receive insurance coverage up to Rs 7 lakh, with an annual premium of just Rs 143 per beneficiary, a measure expected to provide significant social security to a slew of labourers. Around 1,500 Kerala farmers from 150 clusters are attending the event, along with entrepreneurs, exporters, and policymakers.
Coconut is not just a crop but a cultural emblem for Kerala. These initiatives signify both recognition of its heritage and a renewed commitment to the future of Kerala farmers. On the occasion of World Coconut Day, the palm that defines the state’s identity is being supported by stronger policies and financial support.
