Nearly 65 students of the College of Horticulture in Bidar, Karnataka, have participated in an experiential learning programme and tried their hands in several horticultural activities, under the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF). Focusing on organic farming, they will work on producing organic vermicompost, growing leafy vegetables and mushrooms, preparing green stevia powder, and extracting citronella oil.
The scheme intends to promote Organic Farming
Speaking to the Media, Girish Badole, Bidar ZP CEO, said that the scheme intends to promote organic farming. Not only this, the horticulture college students are disseminating awareness regarding the advantages of chemical-free farming. He added that this initiative, gaining hands-on exposure and practical skills in various aspects of horticulture, not only provides entrepreneurship but also empowers students to start their own businesses, instead of seeking employment.
Moreover, SV Patil, dean of Horticulture College, stated that organic farming is being promoted on the campus and selling the produce to local customers, as per ZP CEO instruction. “We recently conducted training for 60 trainers as Krishi Sakhi. The trainers received a stipend of Rs 4,000 per month. The programme will run for five months, during which students will participate in the organic vermicompost production, cultivation of leafy vegetables, mushrooms, preparation of pure green stevia powder, and extraction of citronella oil.
Students earned from Krishi Sakhi
Furthermore, he asserted that Students have earned Rs 1 lakh this year from the Krishi Sakhi training programme under the NMNF scheme. Initiating from August, they sold vermicompost, leafy vegetables, and marigold flowers cultivated over 10 acres of land. Nearly 25% of the revenue has been given to the college administration, while the remaining has spent for students learning practices, including cultivation, packing, and marketing of their produce. A team of resource persons involving agriculture officials, horticulture experts, and progressive farmers, is teaching and training students.
