Australia has lifted a long-standing ban on the import of shrimps from India, providing relief to Indian shrimp exporters. This decision by the Australian government brings great relief to Indian shrimp exporters as they been facing losses after the US imposed heavy tariffs on them. This long awaiting news was announced by Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh, who is on a visit to Australia. The minister stated that the first approval for the import of Indian shrimp has been received. The approval to import Indian shrimp were given during a meeting with government officials, investors, and seafood industry representatives in Australia.

Long-Standing Restriction on Import of Shrimps from India Finally Lifted

Australia had imposed long-standing restrictions on import of Shrimps from India after it had detected the white spot virus in previous consignments. The ban had posed a persistent challenge for Indian exporters—particularly prawn farmers and traders in North Andhra Pradesh—who were eager to regain access to the Australian market after the recent US tariffs disrupted trade. Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh on his third day of Australian tour confirmed that the ban has been lifted. He said the approval would give a significant boost to India’s Shrimp exporters and help reduce dependence on a single export destination.

Resumption Marks a Market Diversification for India’s Shrimp Exporters

The resumption of imports of Shrimps from India marks a diversification milestone for India’s seafood trade, which has been heavily reliant on the United States. Industry experts believe the development could strengthen India’s position in global seafood markets, with Australia’s decision serving as a positive precedent for other nations to ease restrictions.
