Katarni Rice from Bhagalpur a district in Bihar is now spreading its aromatic presence in international markets. This popular rice variety recently obtained Geographical Indication (GI) Tag and is now continuously getting recognition in international markets.
Owing to its global recognition and GI Tag the cultivation of this variety of rice has now spread over 3,000 acres from its previous cultivation area of 500 acres. Apart from Bhagalpur in Bihar, this rice is also grown in Banka and other districts of Bihar, but the black alluvial soil of Bhagalpur is considered most suitable for this rice.
Surge in Katarni Rice Price
This significant rise in the demand of Bihar’s Katarni Rice can be mainly attributed to collaborative efforts of the agriculture department and local governance. The price of this special variety of rice has also seen a major increase with price rising to ₹150 per kilo from ₹60 per kilo. It has significantly doubled the income of farmers.
