Early Monsoon in Kerala, 16-year-Old Record Broken

Thiruvananthapuram, May 26, 2025

The southwest monsoon has made an early arrival in Kerala, entering the state eight days ahead of its usual onset date of June 1.  This development marks the official commencement of India’s annual rainy season, which is crucial for the country’s agriculture and water resources. The early onset of the monsoon is expected to benefit farmers, especially in regions that rely heavily on rain-fed agriculture.  Timely rains can lead to better crop yields and may positively impact the overall agricultural output for the season.

Meteorological experts are closely monitoring the progression of the monsoon to assess its impact on different parts of the country and issued red and orange alert following the onset of Monsoon. While Kerala is expecting a heavy rainfall in the next 24hrs, other parts of country are also expected to experience early monsoon.

As per metrological department high-speed winds somewhere between 50-60 km/hr is also expected in different parts of the country. Residents and authorities in Kerala are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to mitigate any adverse effects of heavy rainfall.

For the unversed, a similar type of early monsoon was seen in 2009, when Monsson arrived 9 days ahead of its usual onset of June 1.
